  Biography

Born in 1972 in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire with parents of Asian Indian decent, I developed a passion for art and design from the age of 9.

I pursued this interest to obtain a HND in Surface Pattern Design, which led me upon graduation to be recognised as one of the Best 6 New Designers of 1995 by “Time Out” magazine.

From this point I followed a career as a Freelance Printed Textile Designer specialising in Furnishing Fabric Design based in Germany, my designs sold globally.

By moving back to the UK in 1997 it enabled me to set up a studio in London and also expand into textile design for fashion. During this time I continued to develop my personal artistic direction, which enabled me to enter into the art world.

My studio is based in Wellingborough where I run a full-time practice and have undertaken many private and commercial commissions. My largest commission to date is based at the headquarters of The Princes Trust in central London. 8 pieces each at 260 x 110cm, which are now placed in the atrium, the hub of building.

An Artist in Residency for Northamptonshire County Council Library Services involved 6 exhibitions throughout the county of paintings depicting “Fair Stood the Wind for France” by a county writer, H.E. Bates.

As a painter, I first began painting abstracts, which were inspired by colours and form and mainly internally influenced. As my painting style and I developed, my inspiration and themes that I work on are now far more representational and are painted in response to an event, a place, an emotion, or other forms of art. Key to all my work however regardless of subject matter is texture and colour.

My communication through these two modes can completely transform a piece according to how apply my paint and which colours I choose to evoke an atmosphere.

I paint intuitively and instinctively. Oil paint is scraped on in layers and scraped off to reveal hidden marks to achieve depth. Lines scored using a sharp edge to create detail and form. I recently began working with palette knives, (‘Abandoned’ series) to explore how a traditional tool can make a mark and contribute to a contemporary piece of work. The result was a creamy rich feel to my work and I found the whole experience quite satisfying as the qualities of the oil paint come alive really come alive when applying in such quantity.

In January 2007 I was awarded my first Arts Council grant. This has enabled me to develop and expand into figurative painting and portraiture. An exhibition of my studies will be staged at Chichele College, Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire from 4th - 11th October 2007.

A major commission of 2007 has taken place between myself, Northampton Museum and Art Gallery and Northampton Black History Association, who commissioned me to produce an oral history vessel, which holds 6 stories of people who have moved from around the world to Northamptonshire. This vessel takes the form of a 3-D Globe, which opens up like a segmented orange to reveal information, art and visuals about the people. This commission is part of a major History project, which will be launched in October 2007.

During December and the lead up to Christmas, myself and another Artist will be opening up our Artistic world to the public in the form of a temporary live workshop and gallery at Peacock Place in Northampton. This will be run as a family friendly environment with activities for children and the opportunity to see Artists working and a place to buy bespoke artwork at affordable prices.
